It’s commonly said that two signs of growth in an area are: expanding interstates and an expanding airport. For anyone who has lived here in the last five years I don’t have to convince you of the interstate work… Well, here comes the airport! After recently completing one of the largest expansions in decades, the Chattanooga Airport is planning another terminal expansion that could add two additional gates, increasing the total from eight to ten, as passenger growth continues to exceed expectations. The airport board has approved over $800,000 for design work—largely federally funded—with plans to add approximately 18,000 square feet to the terminal along with new office space. The project would also involve removing two aging hangars and could allow for even further expansion down the line. This follows the recent $28 million upgrade completed in 2024 that added gates, dining options, and improved concourse space.
The push for expansion comes as the airport experiences record-breaking growth, with over 632,000 boardings in 2025—a 14% increase from its previous high—and continued momentum into 2026. New direct flights and a seasonal Denver route are helping drive demand, while a $35 million parking garage currently under construction will add 1,600 spaces by 2027. With passenger numbers already outpacing projections, airport leadership notes that additional expansion may be needed sooner than originally planned as Chattanooga continues to grow. I’ve already got my tickets booked out of Chattanooga for a May get-away… Forget the insanity of Atlanta, fly Chattanooga, it only keeps getting better!
